Why do politics always have to be so nasty?

A general question, not just directed at republicans because everyone does it, for all of humans history. It just seems like we so easily forget the fact that we all have pretty similar goals in mind, in the end (mostly) everyone wants happiness, prosperity, health, etc.... Of course theyre are outliers, that want to take over the world, have a supreme race, etc....but that isn't the majority.
